Looking Forward

From Crisis to Clarity

As we journey into the second half of 2022, this is a good time to pause and reflect on where we are as an organization and how we continue to improve on what it means to be a member of TMA.

When we opened the year, two notable projects were at the forefront. The first was our Strategic Planning Initiative, led by Corporate Secretary Jonathan Reimche, CTP, and the second, Jane Mitnick’s Governance Presidential Task Force.

I am pleased to report that both initiatives, which go hand in hand, are well in process with much progress being made. By the time of The Annual this fall, we will have adoptable strategies and action items to be reviewed, voted on by our Board of Trustees, and shared with our membership.

The key to both initiatives has been honest introspection of where we are, from where we have come, and to where we need to go.

Since our last strategic plan in 2016, TMA has become a much different organization. It is more forward thinking, actionable, and alive. It has brand awareness that continues to strengthen worldwide, and the value of being a member of this association continues to become more clear.

When we assembled an in-person group of members and leaders this spring for a day of strategic planning exercises and modeling, we brought together a diverse group that ranged from some of our most engaged members to some of our newest members. We sought perspectives from young members and leaders to luminaries and everyone in between.

Under Jonathan’s leadership, we have made tremendous progress in a short period of time and have amassed critical learnings that will allow us to improve how we support our members for years to come.

In tandem with that, TMA Global President Jane Mitnick’s Governance Task Force has likewise taken upon itself the opportunity to be self-evaluative about where we can improve our governance structure. With a task force that comprises two past TMA chairs, one judge, a governance expert, and a former chapter president, we have brought together important perspectives that combine historical knowledge with better practices and an understanding of where we are deficient and can improve upon our practices. This, too, will be critical to the future of TMA.

Likewise, our international footprint continues to grow. Our TMA Europe representation committee put on quite the show at its Annual Conference in Madrid in June, with first-time participation by a record number of TMA members. The importance of how we support our members internationally cannot be overstated.

In other parts of the world, too, we continue to up our game on elevating the TMA brand. With new leadership in Southeast Asia, we look to grow a meaningful presence there. Similarly, our presence in Central and South America continues to grow, and we look forward to TMA Chile becoming an official chapter later this year.

The first half of 2022 laid the groundwork for building the foundation of our future. Our leaders and members have contributed in defining ways, and as a result, the stage is set to bring major projects to a head, charting a course for a strong future for our growing worldwide membership.
