David Balderach and Robert Novak have joined BDO USA’s business restructuring and turnaround services practice. Balderach, an industry veteran serving the lending and restructuring needs of energy and oilfield services businesses for the past 30 years, has joined the firm’s Houston office. Novak brings more than 20 years of experience in crisis management, operations improvement, and debt restructuring to the firm’s Chicago office. He has held multiple C-level positions and worked with debtors and lenders in numerous industries, including mining and metals, manufacturing, and healthcare. Novak previously co-founded a company that helps creditors value and sell bankruptcy claims.
Perry Kalajian has joined Focus Management Group as a senior managing director to head the firm’s operations and efforts in the Northeast, including the New York metropolitan area. With years of experience in finance, banking, restructuring, and bankruptcy, Perry has worked with companies in a variety of industries, including banking and financial services, healthcare, energy, and real estate. He holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, a law degree from Rutgers University School of Law (Newark), and an LLM degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School.
Daniel Rubin has joined ReStore Capital as a managing director and is responsible for identifying, cultivating, structuring, and closing potential retail M&A, financing, and debt acquisition transactions. Most recently, he was a portfolio manager and head of trading at TLP Invest, responsible for sourcing and analyzing investment opportunities across the capital structure. Prior to that, he was vice president in the Special Situations Group at Goldman Sachs and held roles at Och-Ziff Capital Management Group and Moore Capital Management.
Michael D. Sharkey retired as president of Fifth Third Business Capital as of September 30. He began his career as a field examiner at GE Capital in 1978 and went on to manage a large portfolio of asset-based loans. He later established and managed various asset-based loan businesses, including StanChart Business Credit, LaSalle Business Credit, Cole Taylor Business Capital, and MB Business Capital. Sharkey was a recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Commercial Finance Association and is a member of the Secured Finance Network’s Hall of Fame. He also is a past president of the American Brain Tumor Association and is a board member with HFS Chicago Scholars. Sharkey and his wife Sue plan to split their time between Chicago and Sedona, Arizona.
