Those who have been involved with TMA for many years sometimes ask themselves, “I am still getting value out of my membership?” For newer members, the struggle may be, “What should I expect from the organization, and when will I see a return on my investment?”
The answer to both questions is exactly the same.
You get out of TMA what you put into TMA. You volunteer for committees or other roles to build your brand, to engender trust with fellow professionals, and to be visible so that you increase your professional viability. Whether you have been involved with TMA for two months or 20 years, you are doing the work that must be done with fellow professionals to help carve your path and create your professional journey.
For some, that means becoming engaged in volunteerism. For others, it’s about pursuing leadership opportunities. Still others are only interested in occasional networking. That said, the TMA journey, through and through, is about what you want it to be. Whether it be to take advantage of the education offered to learn about what is current and relevant or something that is simply interesting, or to volunteer, seek leadership positions, or network, it is a collective experience of opportunity. And that opportunity creates professional impact.
All journeys have both highs and lows, and at various points in all of our careers, there will be lulls that call into question value propositions around the many things we do.
The TMA journey is one, however, that is about loyalty and dedication. It is about participation and volunteerism. It is a building block to support professional growth and development that at many points along the way culminates in something special, meaningful, professionally important, and personally fulfilling.
TMA is a brand, but the brand is about the people, and the people are better together because of TMA and the diverse network and opportunities you create and we provide.
For those who are longtime TMA members, I salute your support and loyalty. For those who are newer members, I urge you to find the path that is right for you.
Through and through, know that opportunity exists. While sometimes an opportunity is right in front of you, at other times it involves a bit of a treasure hunt. In both circumstances, however, commitment is a guaranteed win through your membership in TMA.
